Miryem is de dochter en kleindochter van geldschieters, maar door haar vaders onvermogen om het geld te innen dat hij uitleent, leeft het gezin nu in bittere armoede. Tordat Miryem besluit de touwtjes in handen te nemen en op pad gaat om het geld op te halen dat de dorpelingen haar familie verschuldigd zijn.

Al snel doet het verhaal de ronde dat ze zilver in goud kan veranderen, en het duurt niet lang of ze trekt ook de aandacht van de koning van de Staryk – een wreed elfenvolk dat meer uit ijs dan uit vlees lijkt te bestaan. Het zal Miryems lot, en dat van de twee koninkrijken voor altijd wijzigen.
