In Felines leven is er ruimte voor verbetering: ze woont antikraak in een krakkemikkig voormalig hotel, samen met een zeer diverse verzameling huisgenoten op wie ze zeer gesteld is maar die geen van allen geld hebben om iets aan hun huisvesting te verbeteren. Op papier heeft Feline haar droombaan: kunsttaxateur bij de Amsterdamsche Veiling. Helaas geeft haar baas alle interessante klussen aan zijn zoon en laat hij de slaapverwekkende taken aan Feline over.

Als Feline een keer iets voor haar baas moet ophalen, eindigt dat uitstapje geheel onverwachts in een wilde nacht met ene Teun, die werkt als bankier in de Londense City. Het kitscherige schilderijtje dat hij haar ten afscheid voor de grap cadeau geeft, blijkt een tweede, veel waardevoller schilderij te verbergen: een onontdekte Breitner, iets wat Teun duidelijk niet wist. Als ze het verkoopt, kan Feline het geld héél goed gebruiken om het huis op te knappen. En ze ziet Teun toch nooit meer, dat weet ze zeker. Tot een Engelse zakenbank de Amsterdamsche Veiling inhuurt om een kunstcollectie samen te stellen. En de bankier die het project leidt, wil alleen werken met Feline …
