“Lewis Carroll, pseudoniem van Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, doceerde wiskunde aan het Christ Church College in Oxford. Op een mooie zomerdag in 1862 nam hij de dochters van de decaan – de elfjarige Alice Liddell en haar twee zusjes – mee voor een boottochtje. Om de tijd te doden vertelde hij hun een verhaal over meisje, Alice genaamd, en haar bijzondere wedervaardigheden. Drie jaar later, in 1865, verschenen De avonturen van Alice in Wonderland in boekvorm. Het boek was een onmoddelijk succes en daarom begon Lewis Carroll geïnspireerd door de schaaklessen die hij aan Alice gaf, in 1868 aan een tweede boek: Alice in Spiegelland . Dat boek werd uitgegeven met kerst 1871 en werd een nog groter succes dan de oorspronkelijke Alice. “
